Gold prospector in Karen state, SE Myanmar (Burma)
As I rode from the Htee-Khee border from Kanchanaburi district in Thailand to Burma, the minivan had already stopped twice at checkpoints along the way. Just before arriving to this one, I was requested not to take pictures of the buildings of the "Setuna" Karen Union Office to avoid troubles. While the driver exited the vehicle to get the paperwork done, I saw by the riverside a collection of prospecting devices. Where those people looking for gems ? I got my magnifier out and by mimicking the observation of a small sample, managed to get the miners to reveal their treasure. The lady in the back went all trough her purse, then a plastic bag and finally handed to "Zotaïc" (the one portrayed here) their collective find.
That gold ball was fairly lightweight, as is was not a nugget but tiny particles amalgamated with mercury later evaporated.
