2014 Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Reserve
Beaulieu Vineyard is one of the most historic wineries in Napa Valley, founded in 1900 by Georges de Latour and his wife Fernande. Located in the Rutherford AVA, BV got its name from Fernande when she first saw the property and said it was a "beautiful place," or "beau lieu." Georges de Latour sold his successful cream of tartar business shortly thereafter and the couple purchased 4 acres with the intent of producing wines that could stand up to their native France.
Fun fact: BV did not only survive Prohibition, but they thrived by selling sacramental wine to the Catholic Church. The practice increased their business fourfold! The 2014 Tapestry is deep ruby in color and is slightly transparent. I simply let this open up in the glass, and once it did the nose showcases aromas of blackberry, dark plum, redcurrant, cedar, crushed rock, light baking spice, and a touch of oak. Once in the mouth, this wine shows notes of black cherry, blueberry, pomegranate, dry chalky earth, licorice, graphite, vanilla, and green cooking herbs. This wine is full-bodied with medium (+) acidity, medium yet refined tannins, and a medium (+) length finish. Tapestry is always a wonderful wine from this storied producer.
76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and remaining 11% between Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc; 14.8% ABV
Price: $45. This is a great value Bordeaux blend, a view I consistently have when trying this bottling across vintages. From a producer that makes wine from $7 per bottle to $100+ per bottle, this is great for BV's portfolio as well as the overall wine community portfolio. Pair this with steak, a good burger, or lamb.

3 “top models” de Zalto para que el vino se sienta, se huela y se vea como merece. Un placer más poder sentir cómo balancea el vino con esos delicados pies que casi parecen flexibles. De lujo!

The frame of the Rinaldi's vertical, the one which opened and closed a memorable tasting session.
Champagne "Le Fond Du Bateau N°9" - Pertois-Lebrun (disgorging 2016):
first year of production for this pure Chardonnay with an almost non-existent dosage. Surprisingly bright and chiseled with lemon and grapefruit flavours on the mid to late and an incisive salty minerality. Smooth, fresh and juicy with a fairly dry ending.
The nose is strongly lactic, fresh and umami, with Chenin-like notes of pollen and honey plus a gentle custard hint.
Champagne "Champ Cain" 2004 - Jacquesson (disgorging 2/2013):
quite a disappointment. It is not the first time that an aged Jacquesson shows itself to be elegant but also lacking in energy.
Typically austere yet smooth and lightfooted, it offers precise minerality and a delicate, fine acidity but it lacks in tension and structure, resulting a little short and tired.
Intriguing balsamic nose with butter and fresh dark fruits, vegetal tones, smoke and cookies.
Barolo "Piè Rupestris" 2010 - Cappellano:
always my reference Barolo, for me the true archetype of the typology.
Broad-shouldered and elegantly full, velvety and gently austere, it shows off the signature creamy/tarry texture in perfect harmony with a tense, balsamic, almost ginger-ish, long acidity. Firm young tannins and astonishing overall balance.
Explosive nose, outstandingly expressive and clean, full of leather and violet, white truffle and tar, mint, licorice and strawberry, coffee and bbq.
Saint-Estéphe 1998 - Château Haut-Beauséjour:
it starts strong offering a beautiful finesse, it is graceful and lightfooted, very mineral and fresh, with quite focused flavours of graphite, quartz and ripe black fruits and a delicate lateral spice on ending. Unfortunately, the more it breathes the more it grows thinner, losing body and ending up tasting watery.
Slightly cloudy nose, dark and meaty, with milk chocolate and ultra-balsamic herbs.
2014 Sine Qua Non "The Third Twin" Central Coast Graciano
Simply based on my longtime obsession with all things Krankl, I was fairly certain that I was going to like this new venture from E&M. But whoa! I’m all in! The inaugural wine from Manfred and Elaine Krankl's Third Twin Vineyard in Los Alamos. The blend includes 10% Mourvèdre. 16.2% alcohol. Manfred’s planted only 1.3 acres of Graciano and I think that there were only about 67 cases produced. So not much to go around. Manfred stated that Graciano reminds him of other Rhône varieties, and based on what he’s accomplished with this first release I very much agree with him. Rhône, but with a brightness and freshness I find pretty irresistible. The truth is that this stuff is simply haunting. An aromatic chameleon, the nose just keeps revealing additional nuances. Blueberry preserves, espresso roast, Asian spice, anise, olive brine, bell pepper and one of my all time favorites, fresh cut violets. Just captivating! Lush, rich and voluptuous on the palate with layer upon layer of explosive black fruits and more of those exotic spices with some earthy undertones. Trademark endless finish. A big, bold, complex monster that has learned to waltz and is extremely light on his feet. Weightless elegance. And what’s next on the horizon? The 2016 Neustra Senora del Tercer Gemelo. Predominantly Mourvèdre! Bring it!!! #manfredkrankl#elainekrankl#thethirdtwin#graciano#mourvedre#sinequanon#cultwine#wine#winetasting#winelover#winetime#winestagram#winelife#wineaddict#wineporn#wineblogger#zalto#zaltoglass
