We know sleep is important. If not from anything else, evolutionarily it is the one thing we know that we have preserved over millennia. And then came along Homo sapiens and their innovative alcohol tricks.
First the basic points:
🔹Alcohol will reduce your deep sleep (slow wave sleep)
🔹Alcohol will increase light sleep (less restful)
🔹Alcohol will increase body temperature
🔹Alcohol will increase resting heart rate
🔹Alcohol will disrupt your melatonin synthesis and circadian rhythm
All of the above are indicators of poor sleep QUALITY, although you may sleep for 10 hours after a bottle of wine, it doesn’t mean you’re benefiting.
Safe to say alcohol is the foolproof way to muck up your sleep. What does this mean for your hormone health? We know your sleep cycles are essential for proper release of tropic hormones (LH, FSH, GnRH, CRH, GHRH, etc.). Without these hormones you will have aberrations in your hormonal balance. .
❗️WOMEN and MEN - PAY ATTENTION: ❗️If you do not correct this, your hormones will not correct and you will have hormonal imbalance (Low Testosterone, PMS, PCOS, climacteric symptoms, sexual dysfunction, etc.)
Lastly alcohol will up regulate aromatase enzyme. This means it will increase the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in men. But in women we see alcohol (>1 drink daily) increase 17B-Estradiol levels, which may be independent of aromatase. Not something you want to be influenced by your diet, you want your body’s own feedback system to manage this endogenously.
Long story short, if you’re having hormonal issues and sleep issues avoid the alcohol. And more so if you’re trying to optimize hormones avoid alcohol. Alcohol has 0 benefit, forget that French Paradox bullcrap.

A sneaky move by the plastic industry. Thanks
🔹Many people, myself formerly included, go out of their way to buy products packaged in BPA-free plastic.
🔬Their chemical replacements, however, structural analogs called BPS and BPF in particular, may have similar physiological effects in organisms.
🔹In one review published in Environmental Health Perspectives, researchers analyzed the body of literature to date on bisphenol analogs that consisted of 32 studies, including 7 in vivo and 25 in vitro, and concluded:
👩🔬 "The majority of these studies examined the hormonal activities of BPS and BPF and found their potency to be in the same order of magnitude and of similar action as BPA (estrogenic, antiestrogenic, androgenic, and antiandrogenic) in vitro and in vivo.
💀 BPS also has potencies similar to that of estradiol in membrane-mediated pathways, which are important for cellular actions such as proliferation, differentiation, and death.
🔹BPS and BPF also showed other effects in vitro and in vivo, such as altered organ weights, reproductive end points, and enzyme expression.
🔬 Based on the current literature, BPS and BPF are as hormonally active as BPA, and they have endocrine-disrupting effects" (Rochester & Boded, 2015).
Because fetal testes in particular are especially susceptible to BPS and BPF during a critical period of masculinization, these compounds may be implicated in reproductive issues such as declining sperm count, increased incidence of testicular cancer, cryptorchidism (undescended testicle) and hypospadias due to their pro-estrogenic effects.
👨🔬 Researchers in fact suggest that because the fetal testis may be the main target of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as BPA, BPS, and BPF, we may anticipate higher incidence of male reproductive disorders to come.
🔹Moreover, levels of BPA and BPS are significantly and positively correlated with a urinary marker of oxidative stress, 8-Hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), which signifies inflammation and DNA damage, and often appears in autoimmunity.

Part 2 – Testosterone 🤔📈
👉Today we look into nutrition & supplements that have been shown by research to benefit testosterone production.
📍Disclaimer: Supplementing with a vitamin/mineral is likely to help you only if you suffer from a deficiency or an insufficiency in this vitamin/mineral.
1️⃣ Let’s start with vitamin D. A study done in 2011 researched this . The vitamin D supplemented group of men (where testosterone values were at the lower end of the refence range) saw a significant increase in total testosterone levels after supplementing with vitamin D for 1 year daily. Vitamine D helps regulate testosterone levels. Our biggest source of vitamin D is the sun 🌞, but most people don’t get enough sunlight exposure to match vitamin D needs 👎.
☝️Because of this and bc vitamin D is only attainable from a few food sources, it has become a very popular supplement 💯.
2️⃣ Let’s continue with zinc. A research done in 2011 researched the correlation between zinc and testosterone. The result: The subjects in the normal testosterone group had a significantly higher zinc level compared to low testosterone group 🤔. Another study showed that zinc supplementation could increase plasma testosterone & dihydrotestosterone when levels where low📈 . ⚠️ A zinc deficiency can hinder testosterone production but be careful with supplementing: consuming much more than your RDA can be harmful .
3️⃣ Let’s end with magnesium. There is evidence that an increase in magnesium intake can lead to an direct & indirect increase in testosterone production (in males with low magnesium & low testosterone levels) . 👉 Indirect bc magnesium helps convert vitamin D to its active form.
📍Both zinc and magnesium are lost through sweat, therefore athletes and people who sweat a lot are more likely to be deficient 💦
📍To make a long story short if you want to increase/optimizale testosterone production make sure to get in enough vitamin D, zinc & magnesium through your diet 🍎. 📍However, if dietary intake is insufficient, supplementation can help make up the difference 💪🏼
