There’s been something thats been weighing on my chest for a while & its hard to explain. When I was in college I had sent out many applications to companies to land a job for postgrad. I had applied for a couple positions at a specific place (who I wont name for reasons) & fast forward 6 months later, in a job that I love, in the city I love, completely giddy with life, I heard back about an application & went through the interview process with them. I was completely mind blown that they gave me an offer to move across the country & to live in one of the major US cities.
I was so excited but, I had this awful feeling in my stomach about it.
If I took this position, my work would go from open source code, to the point that no one could know what I really did for a living. How much it would be for me to sacrifice, as an individual who LOVES talking about her work & all things programming related. To then suddenly not being able to talk about it or, what I really do at work.
Yeah it had benefits but, it was as if the offer was causing more heartache on me, than I was excited over it. I became emotionally distressed & it was all I thought about 24/7. So with my wild emotions, I made what some would call a “crazy decision” & rejected the offer. I felt ashamed of it. I felt that the few people that knew, where thinking I was being a coward & lunatic for rejecting. I was insecure & frustrated that I couldnt accurately express to them the emotions I had felt.
It wasnt until MONTHS later that I finally had the realization I have now. You dont have to accept any POSITION/ ROLE/ TITLE, if it will negatively effect you or, your family. READ IT AGAIN. The MENTAL, PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, and SPIRITUAL state of you & your family should ALWAYS take precedence over a job. I wish I understood this much sooner because, it would’ve saved me heartache. It just did not resonate with me until recently & I feel like these stories are not talked about, for the same reasons I didnt talk about mine. Know, that if you have had something similar happen with a job, church, or sport, there is nothing wrong with your answer. You make your own choices and, you shouldnt feel bad about them.

I recently was thinking about skills to share to one of my friends who is contemplating pursuing a career as a software engineer. I came up with a list and realized it could actually apply to a more general audience of PMs, designers, or developers. So here are the 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 you should have when 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆:
Being excellent at 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.
When you start planning for your upcoming project increment, you have to be able to prioritize which tasks need to happen before others.
When tasks are created, you also need to be able to know how it will effect the system entirely.
Are there any dependencies this task has?
Will this task require tasks to follow?
Being 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻.
There’s going to be times where the project you’re pouring your heart & soul into, end up hardly used, or not at all.
If that does happen you just have to deal with it and, acknowledge that you put forth your best effort.
Some sort of 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
If you’re surrounded by developers, you may need to learn a few languages in order to effectively communicate what you want, how you want it, and better understand the developers status.
If you are a developer then it’s just a must!
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆?
