My oldest son Eugene, setting up the race site for this weekend's Sierra Vista Trail Runs. Eight years ago, Eugene and his friend Dan Carter, both avid ultra-trail runners, started a race to encourage people to get out and enjoy their local trails. 40 people participated. During this time, they also created the Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance, a coalition of diverse outdoor enthusiasts, including runners, hikers, and mountainbikers. This year, there will be 300 runners competing in distances ranging from a 1mile fun run,5k, 10k, half-marathon, 50k, and 100k. As his Dad, I'm proud of Eugene, but as an outdoor enthusiast who loves this area, I'm even more proud of what Dan and Eugene have done to encourage people to #getoutside and the positive exposure it brings to the outdoor lifestyle and community available here in Las Cruces. Dan and Eugene, thanks for your vision and hard work!
