This is the last line on the last song of Kanye’s first album, The College Dropout. But he would later call that line “the beginning.” Why? Because four years before The College Dropout, in 2000, when he was a no-name artist struggling to find a record deal, he used that very line to show off his rapping skills to Jay Z in-person. -
In the outro of the song - Last Call - that concludes with that line, Kanye describes rapping it to Jay Z for the first time: “And I said, "yo Jay I could rap." And I spit this rap that said, uh "I'm killin' y'all n*ggas on that lyrical shit. Mayonnaise colored Benz, I push miracle whips." And I saw his eyes light up when I said that line.” -
In 2001, Kanye would sign a deal with Jay Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records. And it was the beginning of a partnership and, eventually, a close friendship between the two rappers. The two would go on to be featured in each other’s music, with Kanye also continuing to provide beats to some of Jay Z’s most memorable albums and songs. Their working relationship would culminate in 2011 with their classic collaborate album, Watch The Throne. -
But in recent years, there’s been little collaborative work between the two artists. And there’s been rumors of a personal “falling out.” -
When asked by David Letterman about the current status of his relationship with Kanye in 2018, Jay Z replied “That’s my brother... We’re beyond friends. Like literally, my little brother is Kanye. And like your little brother, things happen sometimes.” -
It wasn’t the first time “brother” was used to describe their relationship. Kanye, in 2007, dedicated an entire song to Jay Z on his third album, Graduation, and called it Big Brother. Big Brother tells a story about both Kanye’s admiration and love for Jay Z as well as his envy and resentment towards him, and equates their relationship to that of a sibling rivalry. -
Where that relationship stands now and how it will evolve is unknown. But in a line with a clever pun, we know a little bit about how it began.
Everything starts out as an idea. Even the shirt on your back started out as a thought in someone’s head. Thoughts are the foundation, the roots.
Sure there’s work, but if the foundation is negative or weak... If the roots aren’t healthy, how will the fruit taste??? Perspective is one of the most powerful tools you have to create the life you want.
What did you do today to improve your foundation?
