I’m heading back to China soon! While I won’t be in or around Beijing this upcoming trip, few places on Earth are more beautiful than sunrise atop the Great Wall of China. The shadows of distant hills dot the horizon, the Wall snakes around seemingly forever, and there’s not another soul in sight. The best recommendation you’ll ever get for visiting the Great Wall is to go to the Mutianyu section the moment it opens. It’s a solid 90-minute drive from Beijing and it’s best to hire a private driver the day before to wait for you. It’s an experience you’ll never forget! I should know, I’ve done it 5 times and each time it still takes my breath away! Have you been to the Great Wall of China?
#hongkong#peking#china#zurgleichenzeit#tagesschau
I read so many blog posts and tips about visiting #china & #beijing specifically - and a lot of them were just flat out wrong. Writing my own, and here are a few that stood out:
✔️Most people don’t need a visa for a 6-day transfer in Beijing or Shanghai (and several other places in China) - you MUST have an onward ticket to another country ✔️Google & related apps WILL work if you have international roaming on your phone (that’s what I did) ✔️Google & related apps WON’T work if you use local WiFi
✔️There’s DiDi (like Uber), and it WILL work with an international phone number & credit card. I used it daily to get around Beijing.
✔️Most people outside of hotels don’t speak or read English. Get a translation app (I used google translate since I had access to it). If you can get your hands on one of those apps you can talk into, even better!
✔️Everything in Beijing is electronic to an almost scary extent... but, everyone uses AliPay/WeChat to pay. Most merchants don’t take credit cards, and some don’t actually take cash (so you can’t go unless you have AliPay, which you need a Chinese account for)
✔️The subway is MASSIVE, made New York feel so tiny, I was shocked. Download the Beijing subway app to calculate best routes.

One more from the Great Wall of China!
I went to the #mutianyu section, which has 23 towers, and a lot of steps 💦. Got there ~9a, and it was quite empty, which was fantastic. By ~10:30, the crowds started arriving!
The toughest stretch of the hike was from tower 6 to tower 1: the steps were MASSIVE, but so worth it!
I was planning to do the entire stretch: from tower 6 where the cable car goes up, to 1, and then back up to 23, but because of the crowds who essentially stopped moving by the time I got to tower 15, I turned around. There’s only one narrow passageway through each tower, so it’s not pleasant to go when there are a lot of people.
There’s a tobagan slide down from tower 6, and it’s an absolute must!!! It was so fun!! You can see my #Beijing highlights to see what it is 😁
