SHARING MY MISTAKES • Our story begins on this cold December night, with me thinking about how I “had to” post an Instagram video soon, since it’s been awhile (that in and of itself is a flawed way to look at it, but that’s another story for another night 😉). So, knowing I needed to practice for my performance this week anyway, I begrudgingly took out my phone, set the stand just right, stood in front of my soon-to-be-decorated Christmas tree and pressed record. When I looked back at the 6 minute video, I couldn’t find even a few seconds I’d feel comfortable posting. Everything was a mess because I was rushing through, trying to sound good for the camera (and myself, frankly—after all, I have to present this in front of real people VERY soon). I deleted it and proceeded to open Instagram to catch up on the news.
@thatviolakid’s story popped up and he started talking about how things on Instagram AREN’T perfect. People post what they WANT you to see. I am guilty of this myself: curating 30-60 seconds of goodness when the rest could use a lot more work. It inspired me so much that I literally went into my “recently deleted” folder and recovered my discarded practice video. I then stitched this video together so I could show at least a little bit of what actually goes on behind the scenes. The full video is SIX MINUTES y’all. That’s a lot of mistakes in a short amount of time. You can be sure I’ll be spending some quality time with the metronome tonight, but this is beforehand and I think it’s important for aspiring young musicians to see that it’s a grind. It’s frustrating. But satisfying and with an amazing reward at the end. It’s so easy to forget about that middle part where all the failing and ugly sounds happen. Yet, the more stumbling, the more awareness, learning and the more victory will be yours. It’s actually an advantage.
So, here’s me, failing more times than I’d ever want to show. But even for a professional like me—one who has won competitions, aced violin exams and currently teaches 40+ private students—THE JOURNEY IS IMPERFECT. And I would never want anyone to believe differently about me because this journey is beautiful and REAL. ❤️
(5/100) didn’t get a chance to record a video because I had region auditions today, but let me tell you, I have a story! Today during my audition, between the second and third etude my best reed cracked, entirely down the middle. I started to panic because that was the only reed that could actually make a sound 😂, so I was worried I would have to play on an even worse one and it would effect my placement. I ended up playing on an old reed that played extremely soft, so I had to push as much air as I could for my run. Turns out, the reed didn’t effect my placement at all! I was super worried about the placements because of what happened in the room, but was relieved to see the chair I had gotten. I definitely learned from this, and that is to always have more than one working reed in case something like that happens! Thank goodness I had another spare one to use! Also congrats to everyone who tried out for region today, regardless of placement. Everyone worked so hard!! :) #100daysofpractice#practice#bassoon#bassoonreeds#tmea#audition#etude#music#texas#band#orchestra#area#areabound
