Passage from my Book “Marketing for An African Powerhouse”
Throughout the years, I’ve found that when the whole company is not in sync, it stirs up many problems. And when that happens, everybody loves to play the “Blame Game.” For example, the marketing team would blame the sales team for not distributing the products well enough or not stocking them frequently enough. The sales team, on the other hand, would blame the production side for not manufacturing enough or not resolving specific production flaws, like adjusting the saltiness in our margarine or checking the shape of our soap bars, quickly enough.
Fingers would point. Shouts would ring out. And tempers would flare across the room, scorching everyone’s mood and energy. There would be no progress, no help at all.
What Does Help Bringing everyone together, on the other hand, has helped MeTL achieve many things.
First, it has given everyone an opportunity to be heard and included.
How is this important?
Being listened to is an innate human desire. So are being appreciated and validated. Everyone has something to contribute and everyone yearns to be heard. When people work together and ideas are allowed to flow freely, there is greater productivity and team unity. There is a stronger sense of “We’re in this together. We’ve got each other’s back.”
Second, it holds all of us accountable for our roles. At such meetings, there is no way anyone can dodge responsibilities or use the “Well, I didn’t know that” excuse.
Good leaders lead by example. I started taking a keen interest in other aspects of the business. If the production team was having difficulty on their end, I would find ways to troubleshoot the issue. Many times, I had to give motivational speeches about how important it was for everyone to work together, that their job roles sometimes had to be fluid to make sure that the task was getting done and done well.
It wasn’t about “my department” or “their department.” It was about our company, our products, and our customers.
“Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful... that's what matters to me.” -Steve Jobs

If you’re going to put down someone by bringing up their past, it says a lot more about you than it does about them. We all made mistakes. We all have done things we’re not proud of. However, we don’t have to dwell in the past and keep repeating the same mistakes. We all have the power to change and become better people, despite what we’ve done in the past.
