I will admit something to you. The biggest reason why I couldn't get invested in some parts of the movie on my first watch is that I was sleepy while watching it. But even sleepy, I really liked this movie and was entertained by it, I didn't even pause the film once for intermission or something, so I decided to do just a little bit of research who exactly Teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa were, so I can fully understand the context of the story and give The Irishman a second watch.
And damn it was worth it.
This is one of my favourite movies of the year and surely one of my favourite Martin Scorsese films. The runtime of 3 and a half hours passed like nothing, it's so damn entertaining. Directing, editing, writing, acting, characters, production design, sets, costumes - were all top-notch.
The dialogue was music to my ears; De Niro, Pesci and Al Pacino gave excellent performances, supporting actors like Ray Romano, Stephen Graham, Harvey Keitel and Bobby Cannavale were not less than great; characters were always interesting to watch; movie managed to be hilariously good and depressively sad; script is successfully ambitious; songs were used perfectly; span of a 30 and more years were demonstrated beautifully and de-aging was done really well, especially in the second half of the movie. There were only a couple of scenes in a whole movie where I noticed that actors are not the age we are seeing them and that is my only flaw with the movie, but I am ready to forgive that because this movie is a true masterpiece.
Thank you Netflix for making this movie possible and thank you, Martin Scorsese, for being a genius that you are.
10 out of 10.
The truth may, or may not, be sleeping with the fishes in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman”; regardless, the deft mafia underworld surrounding Jimmy Hoffa’s disappearance pulls you in—even if a digitally modified Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci foreshadows a hit on gangster films as we know them.
