RAIDERS OF THE NORTH SEA || Quotable 🤣 "I was meandering my way up the board while you were fighting the real battles." || Sometimes it's so hard to choose which villager to hire into your raiding party! But I was lucky with my draws and also made good choices last game, so my people were the best raiders in the North Sea.
I really love the clever worker placement in this game. Put your worker down, do the action, pick up a different worker, do the action. Repeat next round. But there are three different colors of workers, and they can give different benefits... And often you must have a particular color to attempt a raid. So sometimes the actions you take are defined by the color of worker you need for your next round's plans.
The game flows really smoothly and while your decisions are extremely meaningful, they're not AP-inducing. We knocked out a 2-player game in an hour including setup. Highly recommended both as a worker placement and a Viking themed game! @garphillgames@renegade_game_studios#10x5challenge

CHAMPIONS OF MIDGARD || Ahh, what a chunky amazing monster of a game. Best worker placement game I own. Best Viking game I own. In only 8 rounds you have to get all the points and none of the blame. Champions is a classic worker placement -- you only have so many pieces, there are fifteen things you want to do, and you have to beat your opponents to all the best spots.
The base game on its own is fun. With Dark Mountains and Valhalla, this game just really shines. More spaces to go. More monsters to fight. Sometimes you actually want your viking dice to die. Also, chicken ship!!!And you never really know if those dice rolls will go your way but that's ok! It's just a fantastic game by @greyfoxgames . I've pimped this game out with bits from @topshelfgamer because I love it so much. I own everything but the playmat!

SPLENDOR || Quotable 🤣 "There are apparently no white cards in this game." || You do what you can with the space you've got! My friends love Splendor because it's so easy to play, and the space demand isn't huge. And once you know how to play, the attention demand isn't intense either! You can play a couple games in a row so easily, maybe over snacks and wine and conversation... Do you have a go-to relaxing game that you can play while socializing with friends?

ARCHITECTS OF THE WEST KINGDOM || Quotable 🤣 "I look forward to wrangling the people who wrongly imprisoned my guys." || Finally played this hotness game! It met expectations. The gameplay is pretty smooth once you understand the locations, and the risk-reward balance is very interesting. A very interactive game. Also I found fascinating that during our play, there was a point when we stopped wrangling each other's workers and just focused on our own. Was that a natural progression or just us?
Either way, good game that lives up to the hype. Another one for the books by @garphillgames and @renegade_game_studios !
Also, this post is in honor of my landing in New Zealand, home of Garphill Games! Spending two weeks exploring this beautiful country. Will keep up with game posts from plays before I left, but may throw some travel geekiness in. If you want actual travel photos, my other insta is @razelroaming 😊

CENTURY SPICE ROAD || Such a modern classic! The key to winning a game of Spice Road is having an engine that is more flexible and works faster than your opponent's.
I was happy with my cards last time, but it turns out they were a couple turns too slow. Oh well, it's a quick game and so easy to play again!

WINGSPAN || Quotable 🤣 "Oh, so you *can* kill birds." || New Zealand can turn anyone into a birder! If #elizabethhargrave and @jameystegmaier choose to publish an NZ-focused expansion of Wingspan, I'd be all about it.
Anyway I finally got to try Wingspan just before I left for vacation and I quite enjoyed it. Good hand management and engine building sort of game. I was kinda garbage at fulfilling the goals for each round, which is very important if everyone is doing it, so I lost badly. It was a learning game and now that I know how it goes, I'll do better at that and at choosing my end game bonus goal card.
I enjoyed the theme immensely and loved the illustrations--they remind me of an encyclopedia on birds. My family used to have a Time Life set on all sorts of stuff... Probably owe my love of traveling to that too, as one of the volumes was about World Wonders.
Anyway, Wingspan is pretty neat. Game play didn't knock my socks off but I can see playing it again multiple times, and the theme is refreshing.

QUEEN'S ARCHITECT || Quotable 🤣 "It's like the old saying goes... I drink like a seamstress." || I posted a lot about this game last year because it was on my 10x5 challenge. I'm doing a different challenge this year, to play through my collection... But I was glad to play this again! Such an under rated game. It's such a sprawl on the table even at two players!

NEAR AND FAR || Quotable 🤣 "Guess what you could've got? More food!" || Started Near and Far in campaign mode! We played the second map and I got caught up in some side quests, which was pretty fun. Our other friend kept getting food rewards by pure chance so that was also funny.
It's only a bit different than character mode, where the stories are specific to the character instead of the map. I am intrigued by the stories told in this campaign, but the core gameplay of Near and Far has not changed and I worry it'll get same-y by the time we get to Map 8 or so (or maybe even before). So next game we are introducing some elements from the Amber Mines expansion.
Have you played Near and Far in campaign mode? What are your thoughts?
VIVA TOPO || More dice games! This one is an out of print kids' game and an absolute gem!
In Viva Topo you take a team of mice and try to get them to cheese heaven before the cat gets them! Whoever gets the most cheese slices wins.
It's a roll and move push-your-luck game. You roll the die and choose one of your mice to move that number of spaces. If you roll the right number you can go into the corner space and take a cheese slice. Closer to the start of the board you only get one slice but you get bigger pieces if you go further.
However! If you roll a 1, the cat jumps to the next cat space and if it overtakes any of your mice they get eaten--no more cheese! I'm not a big fan of roll and move--who is? But Viva Topo is a kids game and you do have some agency. How far do you push it? Do you take the cheese you can get or try to go further? Do you sacrifice any of your mice to get the big cheese?
Takes like 10 minutes to play but it was fun! I need more games to look like this again. Freaking adorable game. I love the wooden mice!
PETRICHOR || And we're at the finish, day 10 of #10days10cards with the game Petrichor!
This is a very unusual area control game where you play as rain clouds growing on crops. You use cards to cause certain effects such as creating clouds or moving them, but you also choose the cards strategically to vote on weather patterns that you want to occur for everyone at the end of all player turns.
The cards are beautiful but also functional, and I really like how different this game feels from most of my collection.
@xelissa.games passing you the torch that @honvsalex passed to me! If you're interested in the game, anyway.
And that's it for this challenge folks! Hope you enjoyed my picks!
