🐻 Hubby & I decided to play Bärenpark last night before watching a movie. I suggested we finally play with the advanced achievements, so we added the three recommended in the rules. I wasn’t sure how I would like this new twist, but it turned out to be quite fun. 😊
However, shortly after we started playing, one of our neighborhood friends shared a link via Facebook Messenger about how scientists may have found a vaccine to counteract cat allergies. 😺One of these friends is severely allergic to cats, 😷 but rather than be excited, he maintained his loathing of cats. This resulted in a very distracting cat gif war. 😹 Hubby and I naturally joined in, which led to us constantly arguing about who’s turn it was in our game. 😬
The gif war eventually died down, and we finished our game. I was fairly confident I had won, but hubby announced his score first, and it was three points higher than mine. Without revealing my score, I immediately recounted my points and verified my original number. I then asked him to recount his, and we discovered he had made an error that lowered his score by four points, giving me the win by one. 🏆🤩
We ended the night with Pokémon Detective Pikachu. While it was light and cute, it didn’t quite live up to our expectations from the previews. However, I admit I suddenly have a desire to have a pet Pikachu because he was soooo cute! 🥰 But the more I think about it, the more I realize I already have my own version in our cat Dash. 😻
🤩 POPULAR GAME ALERT! 🤩 Part 1 of 2: The fabulous @2BoardGamers made the trek out to my home in suburbia on Saturday (how is it Wednesday already?!) and graciously brought Wingspan 🐦 and Everdell 🌳 so I could satisfy my curiosity about these much-talked-about games.
🦢 🦅 🦆🦉🕊🐓🦜🦚 Wingspan - I’ll admit I found photos of the card artwork a bit too scientific for my taste, so I was skeptical. And while it wasn’t love at first play, I can see why it’s popular. It’s fairly easy to pick up; the components range from nice (food tokens) to exquisite (eggs and birdhouse dice roller); and the cards that didn’t grab me aesthetically eventually captured my inner nerd. The careful thought put into this game is amazing. Where does a bird live? What does it eat? What kind of nest does it make? Every detail was researched and integrated into the game. I won’t be rushing out to buy it, but I do look forward to playing it again and wonder if my niece who wants to be an ornithologist would like it (art, yes; gaming, not sure anymore). Hubby liked it as well and even won. 👍🏻 #WingspanGame
Bruges - Next, we swapped teacher/newbie roles with hubby & I teaching Nancy & Carlos this classic Feld game. Nancy and I ended up tying for 1st place, but I won the tiebreaker with 2 extra guilders.💰Our cat Dash joined the party at one point to see what we were up to. 😺 #BrugesBoardGame
Part 2 will cover Everdell. ...
🤩 POPULAR GAME ALERT! 🤩 Part 2 of 2: After taking a pizza break, @2BoardGamers set up Everdell.
🌳 🐿 🦔 🐁 🐢
Hands down, Everdell has one of the most spectacular table presences of any game I’ve ever played. There’s no denying it’s gorgeous. However, I do think style was emphasized a bit too much over substance and practicality.
While I appreciate the thought put into using different materials for the resources and actually love the amber, stone, and berries, I found the cylindrical wood maddening as it rolled everywhere. Hubby also thought the artwork on the cards overpowered the symbols, making them hard to decipher.
While I mostly enjoyed the gameplay - and even won - hubby did not like it and has no interest in playing again. The 2 main reasons: 1) At one point the cards in the meadow were not very helpful, and he was frustrated there was no way to cycle through them as happens in the power plant auction phase of Power Grid, so he felt stuck. 2) He finished the game a good 10-20 minutes earlier than the rest of of, which breaks one of his cardinal rules - excluding a player from the game. 👎🏻 While I would play again in a group setting, it won’t be joining our library. #Everdell
However, both of our cats seemed to be intrigued by Everdell as both made appearances on my lap while we were playing. 😺😸😻
We booked a weekend away from London a while ago in anticipation of needing a lazy weekend as we had a lot of fun, social stuff and conventions booked up for a while, but we’ve also had a pretty busy patch at work - and it was a very welcome break indeed! We packed a bag full of pub and hotel-friendly games but were incredibly happy when we stumbled across an amazing #BoardGameCafe called @diceandaslice in Colchester - one of the best board game cafes I’ve visited. Spent almost the whole day there on Saturday and only left ten minutes before closing 😂. It’s a lovely, spacious cafe with a great library, decently priced drinks and tasty food - definitely recommended to anyone headed to Colchester that fancies some gaming. A few highlights from our day there:
1. Introduced @sew.eat to #galaxytrucker - definitely better at four, but had really good fun playing this immensely frustrating game 😂
2. Another game of #Tzolkin just to confirm I need this game on my shelves again. Definitely regret selling it a few years ago.
3. Introduced @sew.eat to #TicketToRideLondon as well. #TicketToRide is one of the few games about which we disagree - and I strongly dislike it. However, I quite like these shorter variants and thought it would be a shoe-in for our collection given that I’m more than happy to play both London and New York, with their much shorter play times. @sew.eat wasn’t a fan though - so my efforts to clear our shelves of regular #TTR continue... 4. In a great boost of confidence for the tournament I’m entering next week, I got soundly thrashed at #7WondersDuel
5. Played #GanzSchönClever for the first time and found it to be very good fun but definitely a victim of its own success/hype. Thought it was fun but definitely not the best roll and write I’ve played.
6. Played a number of other games as we drank and grazed our way throughout the day (and most of the night...) but rounded things off with a final game of #WelcomeTo
It was a very happy accident to stumble across this place - a great cafe, and one I will absolutely revisit whenever I’m next in their neck of the woods!
Played Architects of the West Kingdom for the second time today and it was a lot better than the first time. Played with the asymmetric powers which helped and I had a better time figuring out how to get points.
I lost by 2 mainly thanks to the virtue track. I still struggle to see how to beat someone who goes after the cathedral hard as it seems like 27 points with the virtue track and that's a lot of points to make up.

Do północy czasu akurat wystarczy. Zajrzyjcie do Areny Gliwice 30 sierpnia.

🏰 🐻 It was a Feld/Bärenpark weekend! After Friday night’s game, hubby & I went to our regular gaming group Saturday afternoon where we played Bärenpark again, Castles of Burgundy, and Bruges. When we got home, we played a second round of CoB. ...
🏰 Castles of Burgundy - First, I want to thank @The_Board_Game_Ambassador, @2BoardGamers, @Ju012835, and @TheGameTable for your recommendation of the @BoardGameGeek store’s CoB color-coordinated bags. They vastly improved gameplay, cleanup, and storage. This was hubby and my 2nd play of CoB, but the guy playing with us was a true fan and helped us better understand gameplay and strategies. After one game, where I was crushed by my opponents, I was still on the fence. Hubby thinks it might take a few more plays to truly appreciate. #CastlesOfBurgendy
🐻 Bärenpark - Hubby & I taught two new players, so we skipped the advanced achievements. One player was clearly not great at spatial games, but he seemed to enjoy trying it. Statistically, hubby & I are neck and neck on winning this game, but I still think I have a slight edge. I definitely feel in my element with spatial puzzle games like this. #Barenpark
🏫 Bruges - We then had the opportunity to introduce our previous CoB player to Bruges. He seemed to enjoy it - and even beat us by a nice margin. After playing these two Feld games almost back to back, I can say I absolutely prefer Bruges, and I don’t see CoB ever overtaking it. #BrugesBoardGame
🏰 CoB, part 2 - Per hubby’s suggestion, we pulled CoB out when we got home. My experience was much improved from the afternoon, and I even managed a sizable win, but I’m not sure how much we’ll play this when stacked up to other games I enjoy more. 😾 We have also determined that Dash does *not* like us playing games. Perhaps table lap isn’t as good as sofa lap? Maybe it’s that our hands are occupied with something other than him? Hard to say, but he certainly nags at us while we’re playing. #CatsAndBoardGames

Player 2 has entered the game!
Updating the logo/profile pic today! Thought I might as well go all out and turn myself into my go to meeple. Red, every time! Thanks to my wife @emilydabbles for the drawing!

#youareincluded#worldpride#eurogames#cph2021#lgbtq#debates#humanrights 🏳️🌈
