I feel like it’s Christmas and I asked Santa for a yard of new games 🤣😂. Seriously, this is the most games we have even received in a single day.
I have no idea where to even start on these beauties, advice (and tips to win) are welcome!
Okay, who’s a 🟦 Carcassonne tile-laying fanatic like us? 😃 This was one of our most fav. things to see at Spiel! 😍 There’s always another exp. to track down, but it’s a classic that’ll never fade... right?
For some mid-week gaming we had a #firstplay of Volfyirion from @tabula_games
This was a game I very nearly backed on #kickstarter, didn’t, but then came across at #essenspiel2019 and snapped up a copy. It’s such a dinky box I was sure it would fit in my collection 😁
This is a 2-player duelling #deckbuilder from the publishers of the excellent #workerplacement game Barbarians: The Invasion. Much of it will be familiar territory to anyone who has played any of the Star/Hero Realms games – play cards to generate resources, destroy your opponent. Volfyirion has a few extra levels which set it apart from the crowd though.
Firstly, instead of a health pool, each player has three cities with increasing defence value which must be destroyed. Players can station troops in these to bolster their defence and also buildings, which grant ongoing resources. Cards can be played to generate Command points which allow you to buy more cards from the market row. They can also generate Battle points, which have two uses. Firstly to overcome the defence of an enemy city and destroy it (or just the troop in it if it has one), or to send an expedition into the lair of the great dragon Volfyirion to steal treasures known as Wonders. These can be played later to also give ongoing bonuses. Lastly cards can generate Knowledge points. These are used to disable opponents Wonders, or repair your own, but more importantly, if you get enough you can use it to send Volfyirion to raze an enemy city. If they can’t remove him by the end of their next turn, that city and everything in it is destroyed.
The cards also have familiar faction combo bonuses, and powerful one-time trash abilities.
We both really enjoyed this one. The addition of manipulating the dragon was interesting, as was the three cities to destroy, instead of just hammering away at each others health pools. The box also fits sleeved cards nicely, although the cards are pretty good stock.
If you like this sort of game I’d really recommend it!
P A R K S | In this famously gorgeous game, players are hikers making their way through the seasons along a nature trail. The goal is to accumulate the most points by visiting parks, taking photos and accomplishing a personal goal. Each each turn, players move one of their two hikers along the trail to a site of their choice and take the site’s given action. These may be getting sun, forest, mountain and water tokens that will be used to visit parks. There are special actions like buying canteens or new gear, taking photos, reserving Parks, and of course, visiting parks. Takenoko comes to mind when playing parks albeit a little more involved, but it has that same relaxing feel to it that I love. I can see myself pulling this out in many situations and engaging even people who dun normally play games because of the lovely theme. The art and components are of course top notch and Keymasters’ attention to design details is virtually unmatched in the industry. Love it! [A big thanks to @twinklingsunsets for lending me her precious copy to photograph, missed the Kickstarter. ]
