𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱?
Extinction Rebellion has called for a ban of London Fashion Week in order to bring awareness to the excess and damage of over consumption in the fashion industry. 💛
In their letter of response, BFC agrees that “We are facing a climate change emergency and all need to act”. However, they insist they can “use the platform of #LFW to communicate not just to the industry, but to the wider public, that not all businesses are equal, that those that support a better future, are committed to change, are those that should be supported.”
Sara Arnold, from XR says: “We understand that the British fashion industry is trying to change its ways but Fashion Weeks are fundamentally at odds with the urgent need to stop needless consumption and to direct resources to regenerating nature. Humanity cannot afford for London Fashion Week to continue.”
London designers Phoebe English and Patrick McDowell have announced their support of XR’s calls for London to be the first major fashion week to follow Sweden’s game-changing move of cancelling Stockholm fashion week last month.
@patrick__mcdowell says: “We are running out of time and we must stop business as usual. We must slow down and stop supporting a broken system.”
We at #GOLDIEmagazine think there are solutions to this broken system if we all work together. Fashion offers us creative opportunities to make the world a better place. We need to view any solution systemically and to involve all of us who work in the industry as well as those of us who consume clothing. 💛
We want to generate conversation which is inclusive and diverse to make sure that no one is left out of shaping a sustainable fashion future fit for us all. This is our problem, we can fix it.
Patrick McDowell is one of our panellists at #GoldieInConversation#sustainableseptember 19th September, 7 pm @devonshire_club.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲?
I learnt a new phrase from the September issue of VOGUE - flygskam or flight shame is about the way we feel quilty for travelling by plane because we are aware of the damage the aviation industry wreaks on the environment. 💛
It's not the shame we feel when we fly Easy Jet and pretend to be on a Business BA flight. Or even when we get to the airport way earlier than we need just to have extra time in the VIP lounge. Or even the shame and embarrassment of our grubby grey knickers cascading over the baggage carousel as our cheap suitcase finally splits it's seams.
My flight shame is more often than not trying to cram too many mini toiletries into the allocated plastic bag. I'm not a frequent flyer. 💛
I am a huge fan of Greta Thunberg, I feel that all generations can work together to make sure we don't implode. I love train travel, and given the choice would follow her example and cross the Atlantic on a carbon-neutral yacht. In the VOGUE interview she asks of us all - "why dont you try to make a difference?" And we can can't we? Every little inroad we personally make counts. Eventually it all adds up. 💛
Obviously that has no impact on certain team members at VOGUE house. Gossip via @privateeyenews British VOGUE's creative director, Johan Svensson, travels from Stockholm to London several times each week by plane. A normal week involves flying into London Monday back to Stockholm on Tuesday, returning to London Wednesday then jetting back to Stockholm Thursday. 💛
I wouldn't dream of calling VOGUE hypercritical but...
